Pupil Premium is a government grant which is additional to main school funding and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who are disadvantaged to help close the gap between those pupils and their peers.

'Disadvantaged' pupils include those who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years, pupils who are 'Looked After' and those who have been adopted, as well as children who have a parent in the Armed Forces.

As a group, research shows, disadvantaged children have consistently lower educational attainment than other pupils.

Schools have to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility. However, they are held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support disadvantaged pupils.

Principles

• We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils;
• We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially-disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed;
• In making provision for socially-disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially-disadvantaged;
• We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially-disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being vulnerable or socially disadvantaged;
• Pupil premium funding will be allocated to priority groups or individuals.

Provision

• Providing small group work focussed on overcoming gaps in learning and extending learning
• Providing the most effective feedback to pupils using research-based principles
• 1:1 support where appropriate
• Purchasing effective materials aimed at raising standards, particularly in reading, writing and mathematics
• Improving teaching and learning across the school
• Funding irresistible learning experiences that form part of the wider school curriculum
• Subsidising the cost of visits and visitors for pupils who are socially disadvantaged.

Schools are required to publish how they have spent the Pupil Premium monies they have been allocated and the impact that this has had.
