History
So how does our Curriculum Vision become a reality? Find out about the teaching of History at our school here.
Intent
For our children by Y6 to be confident and competent historians. To be able to make connections between periods of time, to have a clear understanding of chronology, change over time and cause and consequence of actions. To recall significant events and people in our locality and beyond, show empathy and critical thinking when using sources of evidence to learn about the past and communicate what they know.
For our children to achieve this we have:
- Structured the units to have common strands (Living and Lifestyle, Religion, Conflict, Democracy and Explorers) which feed through the year groups. This will enable learners to make links, compare and contrast.
- Made learning relevant by covering significant people and events from our local area.
- Ensuring learning is sequential and children build on their vocabulary and experiences in new contexts.
Implementation
Good quality history lessons/ units should have-
- A timeline visible to the children in each classroom and content that is added as it is taught to build a learning journey.
- Knowledge Organisers that are referred to in class and teachers check the learning sticks through mini quizzes.
- Enquiry progression is seen through how children use evidence at each stage and apply their knowledge.
- Children’s prior knowledge and end knowledge is identified.4
Impact
The curriculum lead will check that knowledge organisers are used to help children retain vital knowledge for each of the units. That timelines are displayed and show units covered so far and ensure chronology is referred to in lessons. That the units are taught as intended.
